We have all heard stories and seen pictures of the
large, officially sponsored Red Cross & FEMA shelters such as the Astrodome
in Houston, Texas... but what about the smaller shelters?
The Red Cross estimates that there are as many, if not
more, evacuees displaced by Hurricane Katrina staying in smaller, "unofficial"
shelters as there are in the large facilities. Local churches, community
groups, and civic organizations have stepped forward to assist, taking in
anywhere from 1 or 2 familes all the way up to a few hundred evacuees.
Unfortunately, there is currently no central list of
these shelters... thats where the KDP Shelter Outreach Programs comes in!
