Shelter Outreach Program

We have all heard stories and seen pictures of the large, officially sponsored Red Cross & FEMA shelters such as the Astrodome in Houston, Texas... but what about the smaller shelters?

The Red Cross estimates that there are as many, if not more, evacuees displaced by Hurricane Katrina staying in smaller, "unofficial" shelters as there are in the large facilities. Local churches, community groups, and civic organizations have stepped forward to assist, taking in anywhere from 1 or 2 familes all the way up to a few hundred evacuees.

Unfortunately, there is currently no central list of these shelters... thats where the KDP Shelter Outreach Programs comes in!

How Can I Help Smaller Shelters?
  1. Get a list of potential shelters in your area...
Call local churches or check with your local news stations to find what facilities are functioning as shelters.
  2. Call Ahead!
Make sure you call the shelter in advance if possible to introduce yourself and let them know you will be coming by to help make sure all their guests are listed.
  3. Establish a contact!
Find someone who can be your point of contact at the shelter. Write down their information and keep track of it.
  4. Be Prepared!
Download our Shelter List Template (.xls) to forward to the shelter via email, or save to your laptop if you are able to take one with you. In addition, you may want to take a digital camera if you have one to assist in photographing shelter guests.
  5. Visit in Person!
Drive to your local shelter, meet with your contact person, and begin helping them input their list of names.
  6. Send us the List!
When you are done, you can email the list to shelters@katrinadataproject.com, where it will be received by one of our volunteers and imported into the central database for delivery to relief organizations.
  7. Go on to the next shelter!
The more shelters you can visit, the more people you can help!

"But we've already registered our evacuees..."
The are currently almost 100 registry websites and lists out there, including news sites, forums, and sites like KDP. Who knows if the one they registered with will be the one their loved ones look at?

The KDP Shelter Outreach is an effort to bring evacuee lists into one central location, where it can be provided to relief organizations such as the Red Cross. We will leave no evacuee unlisted!
